When you are packing up and heading on vacation, probably the last thing you think about is leaving your home secure while you’re gone. However, it is so important, so here are some precautions you should keep in mind.
Some are more obvious – locking all doors and windows, turning on an alarm system, asking neighbours to keep an eye on the house, and having your mail & newspapers picked up daily. But there are a few other things you may not have thought of:
It’s a good idea to unplug your garage door opener so that it won’t open accidentally.
Use a couple of variable timers to turn ON lights & a radio or TV.
Ask a neighbour or friend to put out your trashcans on pick-up day. Burglars watch for houses with no trashcans in front.
It’s important to note that if you plan to park your car at the airport or leave it parked on the street while you are away — hide or remove your registration information and any other documents that include your address.
Hopefully, none of you will be the victim of a home burglary while you are away on vacation…just remember that every precaution taken before you leave helps reduce the odds.
