Travel Tips: YVR welcomes 10 millionth passenger

Travel consultant Claire Newell explains how the travel industry continues its path to recovery as YVR celebrates a passenger milestone.

Vancouver International is having an eventful August, marking some major milestones since the beginning of the pandemic. Earlier this month, the airport welcomed its 10 millionth passenger of the year.

To put that into perspective, by August of last year, only two million passengers had passed through YVR. This is really a testament to the 20-thousand people working there, who help maintain operations and services for guests, despite the myriad of challenges they’ve faced since the beginning of the pandemic.

The busiest day of this peak summer travel season just passed.   August 21st was the busiest day at the facility since March 2020.

70,130 passengers flew in and out of the airport that day.

Some tips if you are travelling through YVR in these final weeks of the busy summer season - if you are arriving from abroad, remember to submit your info to ArriveCAN before boarding your flight.

CBSA also allows you to submit your customs declaration form through the app, which will save you time in the arrivals hall once you land.

If you are departing, come prepared for security. This seems like basic advice, but lots of folks are out of the habit after taking a break from flying over the past few years.

Empty your water bottle ahead of time. Have your liquids and gels in a one litre clear plastic ziplock bag, easy to access. If you’re travelling with a laptop, make sure it's easy to reach too. The people lined up behind you will appreciate it.

Don’t forget, lithium batteries must remain in your carry-on and cannot be checked in.

And finally, remember that masks remain mandatory inside the airport and for the duration of your flight, except for when actively eating or drinking.
