Almost 10 years after the end of its civil war, this city has been named the ‘must-photograph’ travel destination of 2019.
And the winner is… Colombo, Sri Lanka!
Research of more than 1.3 million social media posts found the Asian city to be the location that travellers want to photograph the most. In second and third place are Yokohama, Japan and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda.
Colombo is Sri Lanka‘s bustling commercial hub. It is located on the country’s west coast and has a population of between 800,000 and one million, making it by far the country’s biggest city, as well as the most developed. It has a natural harbour at the mouth of the Kelani River, contributing to it’s long history as a port on ancient east-west trade routes, ruled successively by the Portuguese, Dutch and British.
“The city is a jarring mix of old and new, with a central cluster of high-rise office blocks and hotels overshadowing red-tiled colonial-era buildings and sprawling street markets which overflow with high-piled fruit and vegetables, colourful silks and cottons, and deliciously fragrant spices. On its crowded streets stand places of worship, symbolic of Sri Lanka‘s multiethnic heritage: graceful Buddhist viharas (temples), for instance, stand close to extravagant temples encrusted with Hindu statuary, along with Muslim mosques with minarets scattered along Colombo’s streets.” – Sri Lanka Tourism
Additionally, Sri Lanka has been named the best country in the world to visit in 2019 by Lonely Planet. Better transport links, new hotels and a growing number of activities are credited as the reason that this island was chosen for the top spot in their annual Best in Travel awards.
The ratio of tourists to residents is relatively low compared with countries where overtourism is now a major issue, so I recommend visiting before it becomes too popular! As always, keep this in mind and be sure that you are being an eco-friendly tourist to preserve Sri Lankan culture and environment. If you need a refresher on this, read more here.
