Canada might be one of the world’s most envied nations, but when it comes to vacation time, we’re at the back of the pack. A 2017 Expedia study showed that Canada is among the top 10 most vacation-deprived countries in the world.
Another study showed that Canadians are entitled to only an average of 10 working days of vacation for every “completed year of employment” – one of the lowest entitlements in the western world. Compare that with 30 days they get in France, 28 days in the UK, and 25 days in most of the Scandinavian countries!
To top it all off, a new survey by Leger and Valneva shows that that we’re highly unlikely to actually even take the few vacation days we do have.
More than 25% of Canadians take less than their allotted number of vacation days. And, according to the survey, these Canadians who don’t take their full vacation days say that it’s either because they’re too busy, their employer won’t allow it, or there is a lack of staff to cover for them.
Now, I have some advice to make the most of the few vacation days a year us Canadians get, when they’re taken at all. The key, unsurprisingly, is planning ahead.
First, book time off in advance, and stick to it. The added bonus here is that the further ahead you book, the more money you typically save and the more time your employer has to find someone to cover you (if needed).
Next, take precautions to prevent getting sick on vacation. Make sure your regular vaccinations are up to date (Hep A& B and tetanus) and consider Dukurol to prevent ETEC diarrhea, which is caused by the most common form of EColi that people encounter when traveling. Pack a medical kit as well so that you can prevent any set backs from minor injuries or sicknesses.
Finally, I recommend that you don’t waste time while you’re actually on vacation planning what to do next. Pre-book as much of your trip as possible beforehand- the tours, attractions, even reservations at restaurants you really want to eat at – that way you can actually relax while your on your vacation.
So there you have it, a few tips to make the most of your limited vacation time. Overall, I encourage all of you to take advantage of the vacation days that you are legally entitled to and get out to explore the world. Get started with my latest travel deals on Travel Best Bets.
