If you’re planning a trip to the Aloha State in the next few months, there are a number of things to keep in mind before you take-off.

The state has aligned its rules with the federal government’s requirements that were introduced on November 8th, when the borders reopened. All international visitors over the age of 18 must be fully vaccinated. And everyone aged 2 and up must provide a negative Covid-19 test result to gain entry.

NAAT or Antigen tests are accepted. Visitors are no longer required to go through a Trusted Travel Partner to obtain their test. However, the test must have been taken within 72 hours prior to their flight to Hawaii.

State officials say Hawaii’s Safe Travels Program, which has been running for more than a year, will likely stay in effect until the spring, but only for domestic travellers. This means, foreign citizens flying directly to Hawaii from an international destination will be exempt. That’s because federal vaccination and testing rules already apply to them, and airlines are already required to collect contact tracing information from passengers.

But foreigners entering Hawaii via another U.S. state will be treated as domestic travellers and must participate in the Safe Travels program. On top of proving they’re fully vaccinated and have a negative COVID-19 test taken within three days before departure, they have to fill out on online travel and health form prior to their trip.

Under the Safe Travels Program, unvaccinated U.S. citizens can still fly to Hawaii domestically and avoid a mandatory 10-day quarantine, if they present a negative Covid-19 test, taken no more than 24 hours before departure.

As for what you can expect when you arrive, state officials have loosened the rules around outdoor dining and activities, but a mask mandate remains in place indoors, except for when eating or drinking, but there’s speculation those restrictions could change early in the new year.
